Configurations of infinitely near points

We present a survey of some aspects and new results on configurations, i.e. disjoint unions of constellations of infinitely near points, local and global theory, with some applications and results on generalized Enriques diagrams, singular foliations, and linear systems defined by clusters. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 14C20, 14M25, 13B22.

Central Configurations, Symmetries and Fixed Points

Planar central configurations can be seen as critical points of the reduced potential or solutions of a system of equations. By the homogeneity and invariance of the potential with respect to SO(2), it is possible to see that the SO(2)-orbits of central configurations are fixed points of a suitable map f . The purpose of the paper is to define this map and to derive some properties using topolo...

Horizontal configurations of points in link complements

For any tangle T (up to isotopy) and integer k ≥ 1 we construct a group F (T ) (up to isomorphism). It is the fundamental group of the configuration space of k points in a horizontal plane avoiding the tangle, provided the tangle is in what we call Heegaard position. This is analogous to the first half of Lawrence’s homology construction of braid group representations. We briefly discuss the se...

Koszul Configurations of Points in Projective Spaces

We prove a new criterion for the homogeneous coordinate ring of a finite set of points in Pn to be Koszul. Like the well known criterion due to Kempf [7] it involves only incidence conditions on linear spans of subsets of a given set. We also give a sufficient condition for the Koszul property to be preserved when passing to a subset of a finite set of points in Pn.

Confining Configurations in QCD and Relation to Rigid Strings

A description of confinement in QCD requires the presence of magnetic monopoles[1]. The resulting effective theory can be interpretted as producing dual Meissner effect [2] responsible for confinement. Lattice QCD studies indicate that monopoles cover the physical vacuum in the confining phase[3]. Confinement is in the infrared regime where the QCD coupling is large so that one has to use non-p...
